FAITH, FRAUD AND MINIMUM WAGE comes from George Mihalka, director of legendary Canadian slasher MY BLOODY VALENTINE, though the two films couldn’t be more different. Where VALENTINE earned its place in the horror pantheon with its Tarantino-approved gore, FAITH puts a friendlier face on existential angst.

It starts harmlessly enough. Casey, frustrated with her job at Krowne Donuts, tosses a cup of coffee at the wall. Only, the stain it leaves looks remarkably like an image of Jesus Christ—or at least it does after she gives it a bit of help. With Christmas just around the corner, religious ferver sweeps through Casey’s town, and the faithful, the skeptical and the cynically capitalist alike all make their pilgrimages to the divine stain.

A small-town comedy with a deceptively complex attitude towards its religious subject matter, FAITH, FRAUD AND MINIMUM WAGE is more than just another entry in the ever-growing annals of Canadian coming-of-age cinema. It’s a look at the power of faith, the value of truth and the ways that they occasionally intersect.
