“In order to plant, at first we looked at the stars,” says the gentle of voice of Feliciano, a young indigenous Peruvian man who has lived all but a few brief months of his life in a small farming village in the mountains above the Sacred Valley. Framed by the seasons, the film chronicles a year Felicaino’s life, from planting to the harvest and through a season of work as a porter on the Inca Trail.

Among mountain communities, the belief that life is better in the city is widely held—and so the traditions of “planting according to the stars,” as their fathers taught them, are slowly disappearing. At the same time, crucial practices of communal reciprocity, like community members plowing one another’s fields, are being lost. Through these and other unsettling details, director Jason Burlage paints a vivid portrait of the complexities facing the future of rural communities throughout Peru.
