Early in My Father and the Man in Black, writer-director-producer Jonathan Holiff recalls that as a child he resented Johnny Cash. His feelings had cause—his father, Saul, was frequently absent, as he managed Johnny Cash’s career from 1960 to 1973.

After his father’s suicide, Holiff’s mother revealed that Saul had kept decades of memorabilia, journals and audio diaries. Holiff uses this material to patch the gaps in his knowledge of his father’s life and character. Holiff’s estrangement haunts this compelling documentary, informing its investigation of memory, relationships, fame and the power of storytelling. Managing Johnny Cash took Holiff’s father away from him, but the keepsakes of that time made it possible for Holiff to reach a posthumous understanding.
