THE NOTHING FACTORY is a genre-bending film that uses an individual factory to highlight the financial crisis across Europe.

One night, a group of workers at a Portuguese elevator factory discovers that their equipment is being taken away. Angered and confused, a few of them decide to spend the night at the factory so that nothing else is removed. In the morning, the company owner introduces a new Human Resources manager and an engineer, who start having individual negotiations with each employee. The employees, angered further and believing the factory will soon be closed, decide to occupy the workplace and talk of running the factory themselves.

As the workers struggle with their individual concerns, director Pedro Pinho expands the scope of the film by introducing a documentary director (played by Danièle Incalcaterra) into the plot. This documentary director, travelling across Europe researching the end of capitalism and the shifting nature of jobs, comes across the factory and is interested in the workers’ cause. His interjection takes the film on a wildly unpredictable ride, ranging from an absurd comedy to docudrama to a musical. Winner of the FIPRESCI Prize at Cannes (Directors’ Fortnight), THE NOTHING FACTORY is a genre-bending film that uses an individual factory to highlight the financial crisis across Europe.
