Doc Soup Calgary Presents: The Backward Class

Posted on October 16, 2014

The Calgary International Film Festival and Hot Docs are pleased to announce that the Canadian film THE BACKWARD CLASS will be kicking off the 2014-15 Doc Soup series in Calgary.

Join us at Cineplex Eau Clair on Wednesday November 5 at 7 p.m. to see this Hot Docs award winning documentary.

THE BACKWARD CLASS follows a group of destitute twelfth graders in Bangalore, India who are selected to attend a prestigious boarding school, giving them the chance to change the lives of their families for generations to come.

Funded by a wealthy investor with strong ideas about how education can transform the social structure of a country, Shanti Bhaven becomes home to several Dalit (“untouchable”) caste students. Carrying the aspirations of an entire social class, the stress becomes too much for some, while others find the support they need in their peers.

This touching and inspiring story by Canadian director Madeleine Grant took home the 2014 Audience Award at Hot Docs.
