CIFF announces first wave of films

To whet the appetites of moviegoers, the Calgary International Film Festival (CIFF) released the first wave of films for the 2015 festival. One film from each of the festival's eight series was announced today just in time for fans to capitalize on the last few days of early bird pricing which ends on Sunday August 9.

BROOKLYN (Dir. John Crowley) – Headliner Series
Cast: Jim Broadbent, Emory Cohen, Michael Zegen, Domhnall Gleeson, Saoirse Ronan
A young Irish girl builds a new life in New York.

SLEEPING GIANT (Dir. Andrew Cividino) – Canadian Series
A tale of boyhood friendship, rebellion and tragedy.

GRANDMA (Dir. Paul Weitz) – New American Cinema Series
Cast: Lily Tomlin, Julia Garner, Marcia Gay, Judy Greer, Laverne Cox
A funny and poignant mother-granddaughter story, featuring a tour-de-force performance by Lily Tomlin.

DHEEPAN (Dir. Jacques Audiard) – World Cinema Series
A Tamil warrior flees his war-torn country with a woman and child he barely knows in this 2015 Palme d’Or winning film.

GUANTANAMO'S CHILD (Dir. Patrick Reed, Michelle Shephard (co-director)) – Documentary Series
After spending nearly half his life detained in Guantanamo Bay, Omar Kadr shares his story.

THE GLAMOUR & THE SQUALOR (Dir. Marq Evans) – Music on Screen Series
The story of the last great rock DJ in America.

COP CAR (Dir. Jon Watts) – Late Shows Series
Cast: Kevin Bacon, James Freedson-Jackson, Hays Wellford
When two rebellious boys run away from home and steal a seemingly abandoned cop car, they get more than they bargained for as bloody mayhem ensues.

Alberta Spirit Gala (short films) – Gala Series
Celebrating the peak of a quickly rising tide, the 2015 Alberta Spirit selection encompasses just 10 percent of the highly competitive films submitted this year.

Ticket packages and passes for CIFF 2015, which runs Sept. 23 to Oct. 4 are now on sale. Early bird rates are in effect until Aug. 9. Full festival line-up will be announced on Sept. 9. More information at: www.calgaryfilm.com
