CIFF Named One of '50 Film Festivals Worth the Entry Fee, 2016' by MovieMaker Magazine

Posted on April 6, 2016

The Calgary International Film Festival (CIFF) has made MovieMaker Magazine's annual list of '50 Film Festivals Worth the Entry Fee, 2016.'

Recognized for the Discovery Awards Program, Academy-qualification status and Industry Series Programming, CIFF sits alongside other prestigious festivals including the Austin Film Festival, the DC Shorts Film Festival, and the Slamdance Film Festival. In addition to CIFF, the international list names four other Canadian festivals: the Edmonton International Film Festival, Fantasia International Film Festival (Montreal), Female Eye Film Festival (Toronto), and Victoria International Film Festival.

The annually compiled list provides a guide for independent moviemakers heading into post-production on a short or feature film. With thousands of film festivals accepting submissions, MovieMaker champions audience-focused festivals, which form the core of the independent film circuit.

The MovieMaker writeup about CIFF reads:

“Our emphasis is on discovery,” says CIFF’s Marketing and Communications Manager Laura Carlson, referring to the festival’s effort to showcase first-time features (34 percent of 2015’s line-up). This year the 12-day fest becomes an Academy-qualifier for both animated and live-action short categories. CIFF also holds an industry series, to which all attending filmmakers have complete access. Previous series saw debates, masterclasses and a set visit."

This is the second time that CIFF was named as one of the Top Festivals Worth Your Entry Fee. The previous time was in 2009.

Submissions for the 2016 Calgary International Film Festival are now open. Early Submissions close May 1, with Late Submissions being  accepted  until June 13.
