Posted on August 24, 2016

CALGARY – The Calgary International Film Festival announced another weekly wave of films screening at the 2016 festival. The Fifth Wave of films to be released, in advance of our full lineup announcement on September 7, focuses on our wealth of documentaries this year. Today CIFF announced 14 feature documentaries and a short documentary package that have been added to the 2016 lineup.

Topics range from missile maintenance, to obituaries, to Finnish cheerleaders. Meanwhile, hockey enforcers, Inuit seal hunters and Ukrainian ballet dancers all reveal the struggles and victories in their individual lives, showcasing the power documentary film has to change the way people see the world. This year, the CIFF Documentary Series includes two World Premieres.

“The documentary section features extremely moving stories on a local and international level," said Alex Rogalski, Features Programmer – Series Lead on Documentaries, Calgary International Film Festival.

"LIMIT IS THE SKY, an incredible portrait of Fort McMurray, and Japanese tsunami survivors in NEW MOON OVER TOHOKU will have their world premieres in Calgary. CIFF audiences are fortunate to be the very first to see these two films by award-winning Canadian filmmakers.”

The Calgary International Film Festival also announced a special presentation that will be sure to delight aspiring filmmakers and environmental crusaders alike. Behind the Screen: In Conversation:Documentary Filmmaking will take place Monday, September 26 at 5:30 pm at Café Blanca. BUGS ON THE MENU (this year's Green Carpet Gala selection) filmmakers Ian Toews & Mark Bradley, along with ICE GUARDIANS filmmaker Adam Scorgie will share what it takes to make a documentary film. This event is free and open to the public.
