Director Charles-Olivier Michaud, Producers & actor David-Alexandre Coiteux, and Eric Mantion in attendance - Q&A will follow the screening
War correspondent Blaise Dumas wakes from a nightmare to discover that he is back home—and that his photographer and travel partner David has not returned with him. From this simple premise, SNOW & ASHES begins and its narrative mystery unravels through a series of flashbacks between war-torn Eastern Europe and the confusion of our protagonist’s traumatized mind back home.
What sets Charles-Olivier Michaud’s debut feature apart from so many Canadian narratives is its aesthetic muscle, lean dialogue and beautiful sense of place. Although shot entirely in Canada, the mise en scène is unquestionably rich and detailed and cinematographer Jean Francoise Lord’s lensing is nothing short of remarkable. Full of tension, spurts of panicked action and dynamic frames that wobble with shift-and-tilt lens work, SNOW & ASHES stands as a confident statement from a new voice in the already-talented pool of filmmakers from contemporary Quebec. Watch for more from Charles-Olivier Michaud.
