“I am Tibetan. Buddhism is my philosophy. Heavy metal saved my life.”

Tibetan culture and heavy metal music seem like two completely different worlds, but the two worlds collide in Shenpenn Khymsar's documentary. Whether you're already a banger, a Buddhist or a complete stranger to both, JOURNEY OF A DREAM is a fascinating document.

Shenpenn travels the globe in search of his fellow Tibetan refugees and documents their emotional and political struggles.

One part of his journey takes us to his hometown of Darjeeling, India, which turns out to host a vibrant western music scene, unnoticed to the outside world. The music they play serves as a form of activism and has created a sense of unity and belonging between refugees. From there, Shenpenn shows the similarities between heavy metal fandom and being a better Buddhist and a better human being. The hope of one day returning to a free Tibet and playing heavy metal are two unlikely causes that find harmony in this most unusual music doc.
