Doc Soup March: FIRE AT SEA

Posted on February 1, 2017

The Calgary International Film Festival and the Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival are pleased to announce the fifth film in the 2016-17 Doc Soup Series. FIRE AT SEA is Gianfranco Rosi’s poignant and deeply moving portrait of the Mediterranean island of Lampedusa, the first port of call for hundreds of thousands of African and Middle Eastern refugees hoping to make a new life in Europe.

Join us at Cineplex Eau Claire on Wednesday, March 1 at 7 p.m. as we continue our season of the most anticipated and acclaimed documentaries. FIRE AT SEA has been nominated for Best Documentary at the 2016 Academy Awards® and won the Golden Bear at the 2016 Berlin Film Festival – the first time that the prestigious award has been given to a documentary.

Both a masterly work of documentary filmmaking and a timely call for urgent action, FIRE AT SEA focuses on 12-year-old Samuele. Documentarian Gianfranco Rosi’s observations of everyday life bring us closer to this place, and to the emotional world of its inhabitants who are exposed to a permanent state of emergency and witness the greatest humanitarian tragedy of our timesThe result is a lyrical, poetic and searingly powerful documentary that casts neither judgement nor aspersions, but simply shows the world to the viewer - to utterly devastating effect.

Tickets for FIRE AT SEA ($15, $13 for students and seniors) are now on sale.
